Networking 101 for Moms and More

To connect, you may have to move out of your comfort zone.

Labor Day weekend felt like summer’s last hurrah. All last week, the humid air smelled like watermelons and sweet corn and the temperatures soared. Then a storm beat its way through and drove out the heat. As it rolled away, cooler temperatures and a hint of dry autumn air took over. For many of us these past few weeks have literally been the calm before the storm. Extracurricular activities are just now starting to get underway, work is getting busier and volunteer commitments will soon clamor for attention.

But what if you aren’t getting busier and the hubbub of back-to-school and community events going on all around you is making you feel lonelier? A lack of activity can sap the spirits just as much as too much activity. Take those feelings of anxiety and turn them into action. Check out my article Networking 101 for Moms from Space City Parent (TX) for some ideas to get your social engine fired up. Each little step you take will increase your confidence level.

And keep in mind, you aren’t the only one looking for outreach right now. Many area organizations and moms’ groups are recruiting new members and schools are always looking for a few more dedicated volunteers.

As you move forward, pay attention to your energy level while engaging in different activities and with various people. The activities you’re most likely to stick with–and should stick with–are the ones that lift your spirits. Most of all, keep an eye toward your personal priorities to maintain a healthy balance.
